24 EDUCATIONAL TIPS It may surprise you to learn that motorhomes weren’t meant to be driven. At least, not in the same way that passenger vehicles are. Car manufacturers spend a great deal of time on the overall dynamics of their products – optimizing steering feel, ride and handling to make the vehicle enjoyable to drive. By contrast, motorhomes are simply designed to get you from one destination to another – driving is just a necessary part of that journey. Making matters worse is that most prospective motorhome owners are usually far more concerned with a motorhome’s features and floorplans than its handling traits, so there’s little motivation for RV manufacturers to improve chassis dynamics. As a result, most RVers not only accept poor handling as part of motorhome ownership but they now expect it. In this article, we will focus on why motorhomes don’t handle well and one of the key products you can offer to help your customers to make their RV handle more like their car and less like a ‘big rig.’ So, what causes poor handling? It’s important to remember that while motorhome manufacturers build the RV, they do not build the chassis. Chassis are typically supplied by a vendor such as Ford, Freightliner, Spartan, etc. These companies have no idea what floorplan will be mounted on their chassis, and they are providing the same chassis to a multitude of RV manufacturers. This means that the chassis is essentially a “one-size-fits-all” and is not tailored for any specific floor plan, or weight distribution. And because cost is paramount, the RV manufacturers do not specify suspension components beyond the bare minimum. The result can be a motorhome that is near its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) before the customer adds his personal belongings. And it may not be properly balanced, either frontto-rear or side-to-side. Add variables such as how the coach is loaded and whether the tanks are full or empty, and it’s easy to see how the suspension may be overloaded. An overloaded suspension results in sway. Customers perceive sway as poor handling that can be exhausting and sometimes downright scary. 25 in mind; in fact, many RVs share the same components as their delivery and freight truck counterparts. Mass production at the lowest possible cost means that components such as antisway bars, shock absorbers and bushings are not of the highest quality. This can result in excessive sway, steering play, lane wander, no return to center, and other characteristics that make the vehicle tiresome to drive. These deficiencies become magnified during high winds, or when passed by an 18-wheeler. Consider that a coach, especially a Class A, has a great deal of surface area on its sides, which can act like a sail. Sufficient wind force has been known to blow a motorhome out of its lane; in fact, we have met many customers who simply refused to drive in high winds for fear that it could cause an accident. The good news is all of these problems can be rectified by fitting the motorhome with upgraded suspension components. And although there are a wide range of products to resolve these issues, the best investment is a Roadmaster antisway bar, which is much larger in diameter than OEM sway bars. They are made from solid 4140 steel in Roadmaster’s facility in Vancouver, Washington. Roadmaster anti-sway bars also include polyurethane bushings. This is a performance material that doesn’t break down like the OEM rubber bushings. This is another key reason for poor OEM sway bar performance. Within just a few years, their rubber bushings wear and no longer properly secure the sway bar so it can do its job. Polyurethane bushings work in conjunction with the anti-sway bar to provide superior handling. Roadmaster RSS anti-sway bars are typically a 60-90 minute installation and designed for boltin installation. How does an anti-sway bar work? An anti-sway bar works by resisting the twisting force applied to it when weight transfers from one side of the vehicle to the other. And when customers feel that sway, they can't help but react to it and steer against it. Many customers are shocked to learn how much anti-sway bars can improve steering control. Think of it this way — An RV is a sailboat, and the captain is up in the crow’s nest. As the sailboat sways to the left, you naturally want to steer it to the right. But when it rebounds and sways in the opposite direction, now you want to steer to the left. And the process repeats itself… forever. Anti-sway bars stop the sway; this means that your customers are not constantly counteracting the RV’s movement, trying to keep it within its lane. Anti-sway bars significantly reduce driver fatigue by eliminating the need to constantly fight the handling. Roadmaster makes hundreds of sway bars to fit a wide range of makes and models.
