ReplacingWired-In and Battery Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarms Beginning in October 1993, all new RVs equipped with an engine or generator were required to install a Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm, but that changed in January 2005 when they became mandatory equipment on all new RVs. Most RVs built during that timeframe are still in use today and may still have the same CO detectors that were installed in the factory. However, CO alarms have a limited service life and need to be replaced as part of routine maintenance. Carbon monoxide alarms typically have a 5 to 10-year service life so you’ll want to make sure you check for expired CO alarms and suggest replacement as part of any scheduled maintenance. All CO detectors manufactured after August 2009 are required to have an End-Of-Life (EOL) signal built into them and alert the user when its useful life has expired. If the detector does not have an EOL signal, check date code on the alarm. The date code is typically stamped on the back, so turn the unit over and look for a stamped production date. Add five years to that date to get the approximate replace by date and replace the alarm as needed. During routine maintenance inspections also check to see if alarm is approved for RV use. CO alarms approved for RV use are more robust and more stringently tested than residential alarms due to the extreme shock, vibration and temperature environments that RVs are exposed to. Alarms approved for RV use must also pass a cooking byproducts test as they are often near the stove. It’s easy to determine as they are marked with wording “Suitable for use in Recreational Vehicles”, “RV Carbon Monoxide Alarm” or equivalent. NEVER INSTALL A HOME ALARM IN AN RV, always install alarms marked for RV use. Battery Operated CO Alarms Battery operated CO alarms approved for RV use are also available in the market, including Safe-T-Alert Model SA-339 which comes with a sealed-in lithium battery. No annual battery replacement is required with this unit and it is compliant with new laws, such as New York requiring non-replaceable 10-year batteries. Safe-T-Alert Model SA-339 Battery operated alarms work continuously to keep travelers protected and are very easy to install. Update your customers current battery-operated alarms with one that will cover the installation screw holes and will hide discoloration or fading of the wall or ceiling. The RVIA (Recreational Vehicle Industry Association) began requiring Carbon Monoxide alarms to be installed in all RVs as of January 1, 2005. There are still millions of RVs on the road today that were manufactured prior to that date, that may not have a CO alarm installed or have CO alarms that no longer work. These RVs may come to your dealership for repair or sale and should have new alarms installed. All CO alarms have limited service lives. Effective August 1, 2009, Underwriter Laboratories (UL) set a national safety standard for Carbon Monoxide alarms that requires each alarm to have an EOL signal built in. UL mandates that the audible EOL signal must differ from the alarm signal to alert consumers that the unit is no longer functioning properly. Let your customers know this feature exists on newer CO alarms to help them recognize when it’s time to replace their alarm. When you inspect used RVs and trade-ins, make sure you look for expired or missing safety alarms. A new owner will expect to have the latest safety equipment installed on their RV. Upgrading CO alarms should be part of your marketing and promotional plan as it will show potential buyers that your company cares about their safety. Instruct your customer to read the owner ’s manual that is included with the alarm and point out the EOL feature to raise awareness of the alarm’s limited service life. In addition to checking for expired CO alarms, look for alarms that have been disabled or not maintained. If your inspection reveals battery operated alarms, be sure batteries are included and have recently been replaced. Unfortunately, accidents occur because RV owners or renters did not have properly working alarms installed in their coach. Replace any CO alarm that is expired and add this important step to your routine maintenance checklist so it is not missed. Also check and replace expired alarms on all RVs that come in for repair and prior to selling any used RV. Potential sources of Carbon Monoxide include engine exhaust, portable grills, portable space heaters, camp fires, gas stoves and ovens, other nearby RVs, defective engines, portable generators, the exhaust system and generator exhaust. Carbon Monoxide is odorless, colorless and tasteless. A Carbon Monoxide leak cannot be smelled. The initial symptoms of low to moderate CO poisoning are similar to the flu (but without the fever) and include headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness. Check the Alarms There are many RVs on the road today with missing or expired CO alarms. Check every RV that comes into your dealership to be sure the CO alarms are up to date. 11 It’s no secret that RV sales hitting record highs in 2021 meant more RV owners have embraced mobile living than ever before. This also means that more RV owners need to be briefed on the ins and outs of winterizing their RVs. Why Winterize an RV’s Power System? Upselling a winterizing service for a customer’s unit is one of the best ways to extend the lifespan of their mobile power system. Here are a few top three reasons why you and your customers should care about this process: • RV batteries are expensive: With lithium batteries coming in around $1000 a piece, maintaining the whole mobile system with a proper winterizing routine is imperative to protect your customers’ investments. • It helps ward off pests and rodents: When prepping an RV’s solar system for the winter, a bonus is you’re protecting it from unwanted animal visitors. • Increasing long-term resale value: It’s a fact that, when reselling, the better shape an RV is in, the higher a price tag it can get when being sold. Proper winterization helps keep an RV’s resale value high by maintaining its power system. If customers are routine about upkeeping their power systems, AGMand lead acid batteries should last 3-4x longer than they traditionally would. When to Start Winter-Proofing You may get asked: “At what temperature should you winterize an RV?” and “Do I need to winterize an RV if it’s being stored inside?” Let’s tackle both of those questions. Ideally, the time to winter-proof an RV’s power system is before winter hits–specifically, any time of the year when the temperature is around 32F. Whether the customer is staying put, traveling, or storing an RV throughout the winter, it’s recommended to make a winterization plan at least a month before those winter temperatures kick in. Between early drops in temperature and checking and charging an RV’s batteries as needed, you’ll want to give an ample time cushion for the service. How to Winterize an RV’s Power System (Properly!) When it comes to thoroughly winterizing a trailer, there are three main components of its solar power system that need to be addressed: the batteries, solar panels, and charge controller and inverter. Winterizing Batteries The bad news–an RV’s batteries will be the biggest concern during the winter, as sub-freezing temperatures heavily impact their operation. The good news–whether the customer plans to store the unit or use it and continue traveling during the colder months, there are a few ways to protect the batteries. If the batteries are being stored, it’s best to do so in an insulated space like a garage or a basement that is kept above freezing (AGMs can handle temperatures lower than 20F). Once in its storage, instruct the customer to put the battery bank on a trickle charger or a wooden pallet. As an alternative, the batteries can be left in an RV on a trickle charger. Trickle charging using a solar panel or wall outlet keeps the batteries active while being stored. If they can, also instruct the customer to check the batteries’ charges monthly. On the flipside, if they plan to travel or live in an RV during the winter then the battery type needs to be taken into account. Each battery type of battery has a unique minimum and maximum temperature range, so it’s crucial to build a winterproofing strategy around that. While lithium batteries are great for energy storage capacity, they don’t like cold temperatures and will require a heating blanket or an insulated compartment for winter use. AGM batteries do tend to perform better in cold temperatures, but the battery compartment should also be insulated. Winterizing Solar Panels Does it snow in your neck of the woods? Better get those solar panels winter proofed as well! If the RV has solar panels installed on the roof and the customer intends to leave it outside throughout most of the winter, it’s best to either remove the panels and store them inside, ensure that the panels are adjusted at an angle so that snow slides off more easily, or keep snow accumulation to a minimum if deciding to keep them flat. And if they want to keep them in use all winter long? Consider altering the solar panel angle for both maximum snowmelt and maximum sun exposure. Either way, make sure you remind them that they need to remove heavy snow loads as soon as possible. Pro Tip: For the best protection, here are the four most important steps for keeping solar panels in good shape over the winter: • Cover solar panels with a protective material that doesn’t allow light to pass through, like tarp or plywood •Unhook solar panels from the solar controller • Label solar panel wires (“positive” and “negative”) • Fix wire nuts on each of the positive and negative leads from the solar panels Winterizing the Charge Controller and Inverter Last is on the list are the charge controller and inverter, which should be at the bottom of a priority list when winterizing an RV or trailer. Both charge controllers and inverters have a wide temperature range that they can function through sub-freezing temperatures and don’t typically shorten their lifespan. These components can be stored in temperatures anywhere between -31F and 175F. Safe operating temperatures are generally between -4F and 158F. So, not much to worry about here. “Do I Need to ‘Winter-Proof’My Trailer If I Live in a Warm Climate?” Call it a bonus of living in a warm climate, but, if you enjoy balmy weather or live somewhere with a temperate climate then there is no need to “winterize” an RV’s solar power system. However, if a trailer is parked indoors or is in chronically low sunlight all winter, then it’s a good idea to apply the cold climate storage directions listed above. FEATURED SUPPLIER TIME-ACTIVATED BRAKE CONTROLLERS: When depressing the brake pedal in a tow vehicle, the brake controller generates an output signal that increases over a period of time, applying braking power at a pre-determined fixed rate that is NOT proportional to the pressure applied to the brake pedal. Your trailer will slow down at the same rate and with the same intensity every time. Some time-activated brake controllers have a SYNC feature which can increase or decrease the braking speed delivered to the trailer brakes by adjusting the “+” or “-” settings. Time-activated electric brake controllers are easy to install, user friendly, and can be mounted in the tow vehicle in any direction. LIFE’S A JOURNEY. STOP OFTEN. Article by Brian Danz Trailer brakes are essential components for your safety and the safety of your RV. The brake controller is responsible for activating the brakes on your trailer when you want to stop. Features and functions - including the number of brakes or axels a brake controller can power - vary depending on the style of controller you choose. While there are many options on the market today, they all fall into two main categories: Time-Activated and Proportional. Let’s review these two types of brake controllers. PROPORTIONAL BRAKE CONTROLLERS: Proportional brake controllers determine the vehicle’s rate of deceleration and apply the trailer’s brake to match. Proportional brake controllers will only deliver the amount of power to the trailer’s brakes as needed: less when stopping slowly; more in an emergency stop. (See chart to the right) Proportional brake controllers provide a smooth braking response, especially when the trailer being towed is a lot heavier than the tow vehicle, like with an RV or livestock trailer. Proportional controllers are also easy to install and user friendly, although it is necessary to mount them in the direction of travel. HOW MANY AXLES? When choosing a brake controller, you will need to know how many axles are on your trailer. Then, choose a brake controller that meets or exceeds that number. TECH TIPS Bad ground connections are a problem. Typically, the method they used for grounding the 12 VDC grounds is a big wire nut or a scotch lock, which can and will work loose from road travel. It is recommended that a ground bus bar is used for the 12VDC ground. Grounding issues cause numerous bad connections throughout the 12 VDC circuits. Most charging issues are cured when a correct/good connection has been made on the 12 VDC ground side. Cleaning and maintaining the battery connections is also a very good practice. Continually tripping circuit breakers or blowing fuses. Take the time to collect load information on the circuits and fuse them accordingly to the connected loads. Having too many circuits on one branch may cause an overload situation that could trip the breaker or blow the fuse. Be mindful of start-up currents for motors and some big appliances as they draw large amounts of power until they enter the run mode. Also, check to make sure fuses are seated properly into the terminals. A loose fuse can cause it to blow or provide intermittent operation on that circuit. Our goal is to help make sure our products are installed correctly to minimize the potential for problems down the road. We are often asked about common missteps to look out for, and how to best resolve them. Below, we address five possible installation issues and the steps to solve them. Most involve fairly simple solutions that, if implemented, can prevent warranty claims and other complications in the future. AC and DC wires on converters are not torqued to the proper torque specification. Under torqued wire connections, both on the AC and DC sides, can cause heat build-up and reduced power transfer. Make sure all connections are torqued to spec if a torque wrench is available or, if not, are very snug without over torquing. The converter is mounted in a location with no ventilation. All converters are equipped with a fan to circulate cooler air across the internal components. If no fresh air ventilation is provided for the converter, it could overheat and shut down. Make sure the fan has access to fresh incoming air so the converter is properly ventilated. The battery is not charging properly. This could be caused by using the incorrect wire size needed for the distance from the battery to the converter. Long distances between the battery and the converter cause a voltage drop in the wire which lowers the available power. Larger wire sizes help reduce the voltage drop.
