20 Installing a TruTrack™ weight distribution hitch doesn't have to be confusing! With a little bit of hard work and this step-by-step guide, you'll have the new hitch set up in no time. Remember, each weight distribution hitch is unique, so make sure you follow the instructions included with your particular model. Measure and record the distance from the ground to the top of the trailer coupler. Then, measure and record the distance from the ground to reference points on the front and rear of your vehicle (e.g., bumper or wheel well). Back the vehicle up to the trailer and lower the coupler onto the trailer ball until the trailer jack no longer supports any weight. Engage the coupler lock to secure the connection. Use the provided lift handle to carefully raise each spring bar onto the L-brackets, ensuring they seat properly. Secure the spring bars with the retainer clips and pins. Lower the jack so it no longer supports any trailer weight. Insert the weight distribution shank into the receiver tube and secure it with the provided pin and clip. Position the head assembly on the adjustable shank. Loosely fasten the hitch head using the supplied hardware. Install the trailer ball onto the head unit and secure it with included hardware. Secure the spring bars to the hitch head with the provided lynch pins. For round bar models, apply heavy grease to the ends of the spring bars. Insert the greased ends into the hitch head until you hear an audible click, indicating they are locked in place. Re-measure the reference points on the front and rear of the vehicle to ensure they are within acceptable ranges compared to the initial measurements. If adjustments are needed, modify the hitch head angle or reposition the frame brackets to achieve proper weight distribution. Determine the target uncoupled height of the tow vehicle by adding 1/8" for every 100 lbs. of tongue weight to the trailer coupler height. Adjust the head unit on the shank to closely match this height. Secure it using the supplied bolts, washers, and nuts. With the trailer coupled, use the jack to lift the rear of the vehicle and the trailer approximately three inches to facilitate easier installation of the spring bars onto the support brackets. Assemble the brackets by placing the narrow channel brackets on either side of the frame and the wider channel bracket over them. Position the L-support bracket in the highest position possible while allowing clearance under the trailer frame. Insert carriage bolts through the aligned holes and secure with included hardware. Torque the nuts to the specified value.
